William Dieterle was a German actor and film director whose birth name was Wilhelm Dieterle. He was born in Ludwigshafen, Germany on 15th July 1893 and died in Ottobrunn, Germany on 9th December 1972, aged 79.

His best films as a film director include The Last Flight (1931), Jewel Robbery (1932), Juarez (1939), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) and Portrait of Jennie (1948), and whose best work as an actor include Fred Sauer's Die Silbermöve (1922), Felix Basch's Fräulein Julie (1922), Franz Seitz's Der Jäger von Fall (1926), Wolfgang Neff's Wie bleibe ich jung und schön - Ehegeheimnisse (1926) and Gennaro Righelli's Heimweh (1927).
