André et les martiens (2016)
Directed by Philippe Lespinasse

Documentary

Film Synopsis

From the mid-1940s, the painter Jean Dubuffet has amassed a collection of bizarre objects created by the inmates of psychiatric hospitals, among others, that characterise what we now term 'outsider art', or 'art brut' as the French call it.  This is art created by maverick artists, working alone and without reference to trends and influences that impinge on and limit mainstream art.  These are the true creatives, the true apostles of art.  In his revealing documentary, Philippe Lespinasse shows that the practitioners of outsider art are still very much with us, offering us perspectives that are challenging and uniquely original.  So refreshingly unfamiliar is this art that we might almost think it was the work of an extraterrestrial.  Do they have artists on Mars?
