Des poupées et des anges (2008) Directed by Nora Hamidi
Drama
aka: Dolls and Angels
Film Synopsis
Lya lives with her father and two sisters, Chirine and Inès, on a
rough housing estate on the outskirts of Paris. For these North African
immigrants, life is hard and the girls' father has to resort to physical
violence to impose his idea of good behaviour on his rebellious offspring.
The youngest of the three girls, 7-year-old Inès suffers most.
Lya, 17, refuses to be intimidated and Chirine will no longer have anything
to do with her father now that she has turned eighteen.
In the centre of town, Chirine comes into contact with a man, Alex, who offers
her well-paid work as a model. She can hardly believe her good fortune,
but when Lya gets to hear of this she realises that her older sister is about
to be lured into a life of prostitution. As Lya manages to patch things
up with her father, Chirine learns to take charge of her own life and finds
a man, Simon, who offers her a way out of her present precarious existence...
In his letters to his friends and family, Franz Kafka gives us a rich self-portrait that is surprisingly upbeat, nor the angst-ridden soul we might expect.
Franz Kafka's letters to his fiancée Felice Bauer not only reveal a soul in torment; they also give us a harrowing self-portrait of a man appalled by his own existence.
