House of Strangers (1949)
Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Crime / Drama / Thriller

Film Synopsis

After completing a seven year stretch in prison, Max Monetti, a disgraced lawyer, returns to New York, hoping to resume his former life.  His return is a cause of some anxiety for his three brothers, who fear he may be back for revenge - after all it was partly as a result of their conniving that he went to prison in the first place, for trying to clear his father's name after he was charged with fraud.  Max's father Gino started out as a modest Italian immigrant, but he soon became a successful banker.  It was his dubious business methods that got him, and then Max, into court.  Whilst Max strove to exculpate his father, his three brothers did nothing to help, and when he went to prison they took over the running of the bank.  Now Max is back in town, and surely it is vengeance he has on his mind, not forgiveness...?
