On the bank of Lake Como in Italy, Dino Ossola leads a respectable but unfulfilled
life as an estate agent, married to Roberta, a psychologist. Not content
with his present middle-class status, Dino is prepared to resort to any means
to pull himself up the social ladder and take his place among the higher
echelons of Italian society. The fact that his daughter Serena is on
friendly terms with Massimiliano Bernaschi, the son of an important businessman,
might well be used to his advantage. Unfortunately, Serena is more preoccupied
with Luca Ambrosini, a young man from a poorer neighbourhood with delinquent
tendencies. When a cyclist is knocked down by a motorist and left for
dead one Christmas Eve, Dino finds he has the means to extort a huge sum
of money from the wealthy Bernaschi family. The scheme is thwarted
by Luca...
