Film Synopsis
Axèle, a photographer, and Camille, a young writer, decide to spend
a year in Rome at the Villa Medicis, a haunt for artists of all kinds.
Camille is accompanied by her daughter and her husband, the well-known writer
Marc Landré. During their stay in the villa, Camille's already
fragile relationship with her much older husband comes under greater strain.
As she works on a biography of a sculptor, Camille develops a close rapport
with Axèle but soon wonders who she really is. Axèle
appears to be sensitive to the ghosts of the past that continue to haunt
the ancient villa...
In the 1910s, French cinema led the way with a new industry which actively encouraged innovation. From the serials of Louis Feuillade to the first auteur pieces of Abel Gance, this decade is rich in cinematic marvels.
In the 1940s, the shadowy, skewed visual style of 1920s German expressionism was taken up by directors of American thrillers and psychological dramas, creating that distinctive film noir look.
A wave of fresh talent in the late 1950s, early 1960s brought about a dramatic renaissance in French cinema, placing the auteur at the core of France's 7th art.
