Film Synopsis
Christine and Léa Papin are two sisters who are prepared to take
on any menial work to support themselves and their self-absorbed
mother. In 1927, they are hired as housemaids by Madame Lancelin,
who, despite her severity, appears to Christine to be the perfect
mother. Over the next few years, life becomes increasingly
strained for the two sisters as their own mother aggravates their
growing resentment at being servants for the rich. In 1933, the
story reaches its tragic climax, as Christine and Léa savagely
murder their employer and her daughter...
American film comedy had its heyday in the 1920s and '30s, but it remains an important genre and has given American cinema some of its enduring classics.
