Film Synopsis
In 1979, Carole and Jérôme set out on a package tour to
Odessa, the historic seaport behind the Iron Curtain. Both are in
their early twenties and are cousins, but they pretend they are engaged
to be married. By day, they pass themselves off as tourists,
visiting the famous museums and monuments. By night, they slip
away from their group and have secret meetings with Refuseniks, Jews who
are persecuted by the Soviet regime. Carole and
Jérôme discover an unknown world that is both brutal and
absurd...
Since the 1920s, Hollywood has dominated the film industry, but that doesn't mean American cinema is all bad - America has produced so many great films that you could never watch them all in one lifetime.
Science-fiction came into its own in B-movies of the 1950s, but it remains a respected and popular genre, bursting into the mainstream in the late 1970s.
From Jean Renoir to François Truffaut, French cinema has no shortage of truly great filmmakers, each bringing a unique approach to the art of filmmaking.
In his letters to his friends and family, Franz Kafka gives us a rich self-portrait that is surprisingly upbeat, nor the angst-ridden soul we might expect.
