France, 1799.  During the Vendée War, as the Chouans and the partisans wage a bloody conflict, Monique and Barnaud pursue their tragic romance.  As they are on opposite sides, Monique ought to kill her lover, but she cannot bring herself to do it.  In the end, they will both fall foul of the fanatics...
