Paolo, a Corsican, is in love with Viola. Despite being forbidden
to do so because she is poor, Paolo continues to court her in
secret. When Viola becomes pregnant, her two brothers swear to
avenge her honour. During a carnival one evening, they stab Paolo
and carry him back to his father, who thinks his son is only dead
drunk.
