Mathias, a fifty-something New Yorker, divorced and penniless, arrives
in Paris to sell the house he has just inherited from his father.
He is surprised to find that the splendid Parisian residence is
occupied by a 92-year-old woman, Mathilde, and her daughter
Chloé. Being an American, Mathias has some difficulty
understanding that the property has been sold to his father through a
viager contract, the upshot of which is that not only is the old woman
permitted to stay in the house until the end of her days but Mathias is
legally bound to go on paying her an annuity...

The best films of Ingmar Bergman
The meaning of life, the trauma of existence and the nature of faith - welcome to the stark and enlightening world of the world's greatest filmmaker.
In the 1940s, the shadowy, skewed visual style of 1920s German expressionism was taken up by directors of American thrillers and psychological dramas, creating that distinctive film noir look.
