Jacques Audoin falls in love with the pianist Evelyne Cléry and
marries her. In fact, he married her because he believed she may
have witnessed the murder of his first wife's lover. When she
realises this, Evelyne is disgusted to find she has been embroiled in a
plot and kills herself. Jacques ends by confessing his crime.
