Film Synopsis

In the summer of 1939, the Austrian mountineer Heinrich Harrer, the first man to climb the north face of the Eiger, receives money from the Nazis to conquer Nanga Parbat, one of the virgin peaks of the Himalayas.  War breaks out and he is taken prisoner by the British on the Indian border.  He escapes and his real adventure begins.  After a long trek across the country, he arrives at Lhassa, the residence of the young Dalai Lama, with whom he develops a close and meaningful friendship.
