In Cannes, Eric Vance is a sailor who organises boat trips for rich
people. He bears a striking resemblance to the famous singer
Pierre Dudan and is harassed by three young women: Lise, Dudan's former
mistress, Joëlle, an adventurer, and Anntoinette, a shopkeeper's
daughter. Against his will, Eric begins to pass himself off as
Dudan and appears on stage as the singer at a gala event. The
real Dudan arrives in the nick of time to save his reputation, but
takes a pot shot from the overly possessive Lise. Deserted by his
admirers, Eric slips away in the accompany of Antoinette...

The best of Indian cinema
Forget Bollywood, the best of India's cinema is to be found elsewhere, most notably in the extraordinary work of Satyajit Ray.

In the 1920s French cinema was at its most varied and stylish - witness the achievements of Abel Gance, Marcel L'Herbier, Jean Epstein and Jacques Feyder.
It was American film noir and pulp fiction that kick-started the craze for thrillers in 1950s France and made it one of the most popular and enduring genres.
