Tabusse is a kind-hearted peasant who lives in the Cevennes with his
fearless dogs, far from the company of others. The people of the
region despise him and he is secretly in love with Julia, the daughter
of a wealthy landowner who enjoys playing the flirt. Tabusse is
ill-treated, molested and finally killed by the gamekeeper. The
villagers hold a wake in his honour.

The best of American film noir
In the 1940s, the shadowy, skewed visual style of 1920s German expressionism was taken up by directors of American thrillers and psychological dramas, creating that distinctive film noir look.
A wave of fresh talent in the late 1950s, early 1960s brought about a dramatic renaissance in French cinema, placing the auteur at the core of France's 7th art.
