In his laboratory, Professor Jérôme Nordman is busily
engaged on his latest scientific research project, to shrink animals,
and perhaps people, without killing them. He also gives lessons
on chemistry at the university, which is how he came to be idolised by
Monette, his most devoted student. So infatuated is Monette with
her teacher that she persuades him to adopt her as a replacement for
his former collaborator, Maubru. This is bad news for
Édith Guerin, who had entertained hopes of marrying Nordman and
directing him towards more profitable activities, such as becoming an
adviser for a company that manufactures a famous brand of sparkling
water. Jérôme is too wrapped up in his research to
pay heed to Édith's plans for him. One day, a dog laps up
a small quantity of the professor's size-altering compound and ends up
as a shrunken stone statuette. Jérôme's elation at
this discovery soon gives way to anxiety when he wonders how he is to
restore the unfortunate animal to life and its normal size.
Fearing that Jérôme may be about to leave her,
Édith visits him in his laboratory. Taken by surprise,
Monette imbibes a quantity of the magical potion and she too is reduced
to the size of a small statue. Jérôme has no option
but to hide her in his pocket whilst he works on an antidote. The
situation becomes even more complicated when Monette's fiancé,
Jean-Lou, and room mate, Brigitte, become worried by her disappearance
and turn to Chief Inspector André to elucidate the mystery...
