Biography: life and films

Abstract picture representing Emmanuelle Beart
Emmanuelle Béart is a French film actress. She was born in Gassin, France on 14 August 1963. A rebellious child, Béart decided she would become an actress at the age of 13 after she saw Romy Schneider in the film Mado. Although she appeared as an extra in two films around this time, it was not until 1983 that she made her proper screen debut, in David Hamilton's erotic film Premiers désirs. Her next role, in Jean-Pierre Dougnac's Un amour interdit, earned her a César nomination, but it was her lead role in Claude Berri's Manon des sources (1986) that brought her international fame. In this film, she appeared with her then husband Daniel Auteuil, whom she had married shortly after working together on their previous film, L'Amour en douce. Their marriage lasted ten years and resulted in the birth of their daughter, Nelly. Béart has used her public profile to lend support to many humanitarian causes, and from 1996 to 2006 she was an international ambassador for UNICEF. She has worked with some of France's finest auteur filmmakers - including Jacques Rivette, André Téchiné, François Ozon and Olivier Assayas - and is well regarded for the authenticity, depth and charm she brings to her complex character portrayals.
