Biography: life and films

Abstract picture representing Roschdy Zem
Roschdy Zem is a French film actor and film director. He was born in Gennevilliers, France on 28 September 1965. The son of Moroccan immigrants, he began his acting career on the Paris stage at the age of 20. Josiane Balasko gave him his first film role in her 1987 film comedy Les Keufs. Over the next decade, Zem would become one of the most prominent and most highly regarded black actors in France. Adept at playing both comedy and straight drama, he worked with some of the country's top auteur filmmakers, including André Téchiné (J'embrasse pas, Ma saison préférée, Alice et Martin), Patrice Chéreau (Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train) and Pierre Jolivet (Fred, Ma petite entreprise). In 2006, he received a collective Best Actor award at Cannes as part of the male ensemble on Rachid Bouchareb's Indigènes. The same year, Zem made his directorial debut with Mauvaise foi (2006).
