Henriette Saulnier struggles to run her isolated farm in the country, in spite of the fact that its owner, Louis Guillon, has neglected to maintain the farm buildings.  Guillon is in no hurry to remedy the situation.  For the present he is happy to bide his time until he can sell the farm for the highest price...
