Film Synopsis
Algeria, in the 1930s. Younès is nine years old when his parents send him to Oran to live with his uncle, a pharmacist, in the hope that he will gain a better education. Adopting a new name, Jonas, so he will fit in better, the boy proves to be an adept scholar and has no difficulty forging friendships with his classmates. He has his first experience of love with a sweet little girl of his age, Emilie. As the years pass, Jonas lives up to his parents' expectations and can look forward to a brilliant career, but then the struggle for Algerian independence begins...© James Travers
