After the death of her father, ruined by risky investments, Jeanne de
Romer must support not only herself and her young siblings, but also
her mother and grandfather. Things go from bad to worse when she
loses her job as a typist after her employer is arrested for
fraud. Marthe Geffier, the owner of an upmarket brothel, comes to
Jeanne's rescue, offering a substantial loan in the hope that she can
coax her into her establishment. When she discovers her
benefactor's intentions, Jeanne makes a hasty retreat.

The very best sci-fi movies
Science-fiction came into its own in B-movies of the 1950s, but it remains a respected and popular genre, bursting into the mainstream in the late 1970s.
In the 1920s French cinema was at its most varied and stylish - witness the achievements of Abel Gance, Marcel L'Herbier, Jean Epstein and Jacques Feyder.
