Désirée, alias La Squale, basks in the reputation of the
father she never knew - Souleymane, an infamous mobster. Whenever
her path crosses that of the gang boss Toussaint she never ceases to
attract his gaze. Even though he is obsessed with Yasmine, a shy
girl closeted at home by her brothers, Désirée succeeds
in making a conquest of him. It turns out to be a hollow victory,
as Toussaint, an unrepentant rapist, abandons and betrays her.
Devastated, Désirée is about to discover the truth of her
origins...

Continental Films, quality cinema under the Nazi Occupation
At the time of the Nazi Occupation of France during WWII, the German-run company Continental produced some of the finest films made in France in the 1940s.
In the 1920s French cinema was at its most varied and stylish - witness the achievements of Abel Gance, Marcel L'Herbier, Jean Epstein and Jacques Feyder.
Science-fiction came into its own in B-movies of the 1950s, but it remains a respected and popular genre, bursting into the mainstream in the late 1970s.
