Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (1982) Directed by Roger Coggio
Comedy
Film Synopsis
Monsieur Jourdain dreams that he is received by the King at the Palace
of Versailles. When he awakes, Jourdain immediately sets about
trying to acquire the manners and aspect of a gentleman, for at the
moment, sad to say, he is a mere bourgeois. Eager to acquire the
accomplishments of dance, music and weaponry, he engages teachers to
help him master these skills which are, to his mind, so essential for a
gentleman of culture and refinement. Of course he must change his
manner of dress, but his new colourful adornments only provoke hilarity
in his household. Through the marquise Dorimène he meets
an authoritarian count who intends to profit from his naivety.
Before he knows it, Monsieur Jourdain is squandering a fortune on a
ballet, arranged for the honour of the young marquise. When his
daughter Lucile asks his permission to marry Cléonte, Jourdain
defuses, as he is most definitely not a gentleman. With the help
of her servant Covielle, Cléonte devises a ruse to trick her
father into giving his assent to her marriage...
