Film Synopsis
1866, during a performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore in Venice, an
anti-Austrian demonstration is in full throttle. The Marquis
Ussoni, an Italian patriot, publicly attacks Lieutenant Franz
Mahler. His cousin, the beautiful Countess Livia Serpieri, is on
good terms with the occupiers and intervenes in his favour.
Despite the Countess's best efforts, Ussoni is arrested and sent into
exile. Franz Mahler seduces Livia and she becomes his
mistress. As Prussia goes to war with Austria, Livia becomes
consumed by despair.
