La Tête de maman (2007) Directed by Carine Tardieu
Comedy / Drama
aka: In Mom's Head
Film Synopsis
Lulu is 15 and like many girls of her age she is finding the transition
from childhood to adulthood painful. She receives little support from
her mother, Juliette, who seems to have become almost completely detached
from the world. Lulu cannot account for her mother's obvious unhappiness.
She hardly every talks to people, she has no friends, and just mopes about
all of the time, never smiling, never laughing. It is as if the life
has completely gone out of her. And yet Juliette wasn't always like
this. In some old photographs and a home movie Lulu sees a very different
woman.
When she was twenty, before Lulu was born, Juliette was as cheerful and
out-going as any woman of her age. She appears happiest when she is
in the company of her boyfriend, Jacques - how she must have been in love!
Lulu has never seen her mother look so alive than in these fading imprints
of her past life. Now she realises just why Juliette is so unhappy.
She is pining for the only man she ever loved, her beloved Romeo. Without
delay, the enterprising teenager sets out to find the missing man and reunite
him with his lost love, believing that by doing so she will restore to her
mother's face the smile that has been absent for so long...
With so many great films to choose from, it's nigh on impossible to compile a short-list of the best 15 French films of all time - but here's our feeble attempt to do just that.
From Jean Renoir to François Truffaut, French cinema has no shortage of truly great filmmakers, each bringing a unique approach to the art of filmmaking.
